IC Information
Name: Renko Usami
Age: Unknown, but she's probably in her mid 20s, given she's a graduate student
Canon: Touhou Project
Canon Point: post Neo-traditionalism of Japan
Physical Description: http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Renko_Usami#Gallery Renko dresses in semi-formal dress accented by typical Japanese alternative fashions. It's kind of a very casual EGA fashion in some ways, what with the skirt and tie look. But for the most part, she's pretty non-descript compared to her partner. Either way they both look incredibly out of place in modern-day Japan. Oops.
Canon Abilities: Renko has one of the most unique, if somewhat useless, abilities in Touhou canon. She is basically a living GPS, able to use the sky to tell her exact location and the exact time of day to the second. The problem is that she can only do this with a clear night sky. There's not much else to it than that
Possessions: Her clothing, her student ID card, and a photo of Maribel.
Personality: Renko herself is firmly grounded in logic and objective thinking. She has had hard study and thought discipline instilled in her by her parents, who lived in Tokyo (considered to be a bit backwater in the future presented in Renko's story) and wanted her to go on to greater things than they had. With this sort of thing hammered into her since her very youngest days, Renko grew up into someone relies very heavily on how they percieve the physical world around them in order to understand it. It's no wonder she went into Physics.
Of course this also lead to rather awkward social growth for her. Renko never really had friends in highschool, and was considered so much of a brain that no boy would ever ask her out for a date. Not that she had the free time for them anyways, constantly studying as she was. Renko passed all of her exams in the top ranking, of course, but never really learned to talk to other people all that well. This lead to some odd behavior being developed in her. Such as staring into the sky randomly and spacing out in the middle of conversations. Or explaining everything without allowing the other person to get a word in edgewise. Or completely changing a topic almost at random.
Renko had no friends until she went to university. There she met the foreigner Maribel Hearn (which Renko has a lot of trouble pronouncing correctly, so she just calls her "Mary"). As it turns out, Maribel was ALSO bizarre. But on the different end of the spectrum. Maribel was a more subjectively thinking person, believing in philosophy and spirituality and majoring in psychology. Of course she was also an odd duck amongst all the relatively normal people in their school. By some bizarre miracle, they hit it off. Perhaps because together they made up the parts that were missing in each other's lives. Plus, through Maribel, Renko came to find intense interest in a field that science otherwise allowed to remain untouched... the paranormal.
Throughout the course of Renko and Maribel's adventures, the core conflict seems to be Renko's grounded and objective way of thinking vs the fantastic reality of Maribel's powers and what they've allowed her, and the two of them together later on, to do. The world of gods, of youkai, of the mystic Gensokyo, is all far too outside the realm of science for Renko to accept at first. She insists that the world of dreams in Mary's head is not real, and there's no way for the two to intertwine. She starts to ease up on this over time, wanting to earnestly believe Maribel, but also living with a deep fear that her only friend will be spirited away to this realm of fantasy if they're not careful.
When Maribel is injured in one of their trips into the "realm of dreams/fantasy", Renko grows even more concerned and finally has Maribel see a doctor about the whole thing. They can't really diagnose her, chalking it up to some form of sleep psychosis, and send her to recover in a remote location, all the while Renko constantly worrying about her friend and the potential realities they've stumbled upon. When Mary gets back, and shows that her powers have only gotten stronger, Renko makes a resolution.
No matter what strange place Mary's powers will take them, what discoveries they will make, she wants to do so at her side, and not be the one chasing or worrying any longer. They were in this together, thick as thieves, and she would just learn to adapt her way of thinking to the fantasy of Mary's powers, and what existed in and between the borders of reality and illusion.
